I thought about this already, thank you. But won't this result in having many messages twice? Should I delete all messages first and so use the Transfer My Information app or will this exist fine with some messages already synchronized via the Microsoft account?

Information technology seems fine on mine, I haven't noticed any duplication but I admit I haven't searched all that difficult. Did the aforementioned with Contacts and that definitely didn't duplicate, just copied over the missing ones.

I just tried. Interestingly, the app tells me that just contacts can be copied from my Lumia 920, nothing else. So it looks like that won't piece of work. (I tried multiple times, only contact transfer ever gets offered.) I take the well-nigh current version of the app installed.

I recently got a Lumia 950 40 (my phone before was a Lumia 920) and everything from the device fill-in on the 920 restored wonderfully - with one exception: There are quite a lot of text messages still missing. It's been ii days now and the messages app stopped restoring messages after a few hours. It'due south besides not clear which pattern the restore followed - there are some very new messages there, just most messages from the last six months are just missing (but again, I stress, some are there - that's the strange part).
Is there any style to force a sync? I would really like to take all my messages again. I as well already switched betwixt sync modes (all messages, the final year, the last calendar month), but that didn't assistance and didn't trigger a re-sync.

I used the regular backup from my old Windows Phone 8.1 Nokia Lumia 930, with settings "backup/text messages/ download messages from: any time" and went into "apps+settings" and made a backup with "all on" for settings backup and app backup. Switched off my old telephone.
Started the new Microsoft Lumia 950 and typed in my Windows ID and then it started restore just I was likewise missing majority of my text messages, I did not know how many at that time?

I connected my phone to my PC with USB cable.
From my new telephone I made a fill-in to the "Phone\Documents" with SMS (~4000 items) and then I connected to my PC with USB. I removed the backup and copy-pasted from sometime to new phone with same location. Then I started the restore and I restored 17000 items. I went into my new phones text messages and voila everything back again.
I hope this workaround tin can aid others that don't desire to lose text bulletin history.

When I backup, information technology does not give me the option to backup locally. On the Lumia 820, it but backs upwardly to the cloud. When I get to One Drive, I cannot access this back-up so I cannot re-create information technology and utilise it elsewhere. Checking my memory usage, I have determined that I have ii.4GB of messages but I do not take admission to copy them and paste them to the new phone. Microsoft should do something nearly this otherwise, I might as well switch to an Android telephone now and not have to worry about this kind of issue when I modify phones. I have had the new phone for two weeks and have not started using it because I need to movement my messages. If by the finish of this week I am unable to resolve it, I will get and buy an Android phone and give up on Lumia!

To get the ability to backup locally, y'all have to install the Contacts & Letters Backup Apps from the Windows Shop, rather than use the pre-installed fill-in mechanism, which uses OneDrive. I've found the App in both the 8.1 and Mobile 10 App stores.
I've merely successfully used that Contacts & Messages Backup procedure described above, and recovered around ten,000 letters which went AWOL during my upgrade from a Lumia 635 on 8.i to a 650 running Win Mobile ten :)
It as well managed to merge the missing old messages with the new letters that had been received only on the new phone since doing the upgrade.

This is the solution that worked for me to restore missing SMS messages from my erstwhile Nokia 920 (Windows 8.1) telephone to my new Nokia 950 (Windows 10) phone. Easy to do, and much faster than trying to utilise apps that rely on Bluetooth or wireless connectivity between phones (which both failed for me anyway).
As Janus noted, this solution does not work with MMS letters, probably because of the photos and other items attached to those kind of messages. But I am very happy to have my SMS message history now intact.
I am planning to regularly use the contacts+message fill-in function on my Nokia 950 as a regular redundant backup in case the phone ever quits being able to automatically sync/backup letters to OneDrive. I believe that is what happened with my old Windows 8.i phone over a year ago, and why the message app download was incomplete when I gear up my new Windows 10 phone. It's a mutual complaint that Windows Phone 8.1 users have experienced. The but saving grace is that my Nokia 920 still had all my text letters stored within the phone app itself, and were easy to backup and transfer to my new telephone with Janus' helpful instructions.
Whoever created contacts+bulletin backup deserves a peachy large TYVM for creating a very useful app.

Thanks. and then much for these instructions. I am trying to motility SMS from a Lumia 1020 (Windows 8.one; no SD carte du jour) to Lumia 950 (Windows 10). I believe I am following all these steps correctly and yet am non able to restore my old conversations. I suspect I am doing something wrong in the last part. Could someone who has done this successfully on similar devices please elaborate on "Then I started the restore"?
I have the sometime phone'due south .hsh and .msg files replacing the new phone'south fill-in file in the same location every bit the new phone'south fill-in and have restored twice with no success.

I was able to get all text messages and some MMS, no rhyme or reason as to why some and not other MMS were restored. Telephone was a Microsoft Lumia 650 dual sim, Windows x.
